The Black Bear's appearance is medium-sized, and it is
usually black with a brown muzzle. Black is generally the color,
although brown
color phases are also common. The brown color phase can confuse
people...leading them
to believe they are Brown Bears. There is no shoulder hump (which is
characteristic of GrizzlyBears), and quite often has a white patch on the
chest.
Kermode bears (white phase of Black Bears) are found along the
north-central coast of British Columbia, and up into the Yukon Territory, or
the Pacific Northwest of Canada. Black bears have strong, curved
claws used for digging and ripping. The profile of the Black Bear
(Kermode and brown phase) face is convex as compared with the
concave profile of a Grizzly or Brown Bear.
The adult male Black Bear's size range from approximately 130 to
190 centimeters (50 to 75 inches) in length and could weigh 60 to 300 kilograms
(130 to 660 pounds). The adult female Black Bear's size measure
anywhere from 130 to 190 centimeters (50 to 75
inches) and weigh 40 to 80 kilograms (90 to 175 pounds). An adult male
(or Boar) may be considerably larger, by as much as 20 to 60 percent
more than the female. Black Bear cubs weigh 225 to 330 grams (7 to 11
ounces) at birth.
