The Black Bear's diet is similar to that of the brown bears, omnivores who will eat almost anything, but it is more markedly herbivorous. Black Bears are solitary animals that wander all their lives in search of food. Depending on the season, for example during the spring (April-May) , vegetative matter makes up between 80% and 95% of its diet. In June they add insects, grubs and ants to their diet, and in the fall the main source of foods are berries, mushrooms and acorns with supplement of carrion whenever available. Some Black Bears may congregate around rubbish dumps or campsites and seize available food. Scarcity or abundance of natural food has much to do with this Black Bear behavior. Black Bears will eat almost anything. They will gorge themselves until their stomach can hold no more, sleep it off, and start the process over again. Occasionally they will take small domestic animals, although they are attracted to the odor of rotting flesh, by their highly sensitive noses, and are often unjustly blamed for killing animals. Fall is a critical period as far as nutrition is concerned. Black bears are normally adaptable during when the spawning Pacific salmon swim up certain rivers in Alaska and western Canada to spawn. The bears of the Pacific coastal region will gather along the rivers to fish in the shallows, often in close proximity to fishing Grizzlies. Sufficient reserves of fat must be built up for the winter, this is particularly important for those females which are going to be suckling young during the winter retreat. click here to continue Black Bear profile
